Medical linear actuators

Xeryon's XLA is an extremely compact linear actuator, perfectly suitable for medical applications requiring highly precise and reliable motion.

Designed for maximum efficiency in delicate, space-constrained and / portable environments, it weighs less than 6 grams and is less than 6 mm wide when fitted with our smallest 1N motor.

Our medical linear actuators are driven by our patented direct-drive ultrasonic motor, eliminating transmission components and bulky DC, stepper or servo motors.

Unlike electronic motors, our ultrasonic piezo motors do not produce any significant magnetic fields.

Linear actuators for medical equipment

These miniature actuators combine precision, speed and travel range in an ultra-compact, energy-efficient and noiseless design. These feature make it highly suitable for use in medical devices and environments.

General specifications:

  • Dimensions: starting at 22,7 x 14,8 x 5,4mm.
  • Extremely slim and stackable design for easy integration.
  • Mass: starting at 5,5 grams.
  • Travel range: 5 mm ... 300 mm.
  • Speed: ≤ 400 mm/s in closed loop, ≤ 1000 mm/s in open loop.
  • Encoder resolution: 50 µm ... 78 nm.
  • Driving forces: 1N ... 10N.
  • Lifetime: > 1000 kilometers or 20 million cycles.

Additional beneficial properties for medical applications:

  • Optional integrated encoder.
  • Low power consumption (<5W).
  • Low, safe voltage (<48V).
  • Self-locking, meaning no power needed to hold desired actuator position.
  • Greatly reduced energy consumption and heat dissipation due to the above.
  • Silent operation due to ultrasonic motor.
  • Capable of slow and constant scanning speeds.
  • No magnetic field generation.
  • Back-drivable (actuator can be manually overriden without affecting lifetime).
  • No wear-induced play (no loss of accuracy over time)
Linear actuator for medical applications

Example applications of medical linear actuators

Its features make our micro linear actuators perfectly suited for medical applications. Here, high precision and reliability are essential, often combined with an optimal use of space. Xeryon's medical linear actuators are designed for this, and therefore are commonly used in medical applications such as:

- Automated liquid dispensing (slim & highly stackable design)
- Diagnostic imaging equipment (long stroke & high speed)
- Laboratory automation such as sample handling (high throughput)
- Adjustable lighting & optics in medical settings (fast lens focusing)
- Etc.
